Farming allowed the large empires to grow in population, wealth, and trade.

Food allows the population to grow stronger and create more offspring.

Food could also be used to barter/trade in which they can be exchanged for good/supplies, in other words, food can be considered as a currency.

Similar to the idea of wealth, food can be traded in the same sense.
