Describe two different problems with early machine guns. What was done to try and solve these problems?

Answer: They would rapidly overheat and become inoperative without the aid of cooling mechanisms so to fix this they were consequently fired in short rather than sustained bursts and they were water cooled and air cooled to prevent it from overheating.
