The Christian areas of Europe in the Middle Ages were often referred to as the “Holy Roman Empire”. This was because the church had a great deal of political power and influence during this time. The Holy Roman Empire was a vast territory that included modern-day Germany, Austria, Hungary, and parts of Italy and Czech Republic. Although it was not an official country, it was a powerful force in medieval Europe.
