Based on Northup's description, the essence of southern slavery is one of great cruelty and inhumanity. Slaves were treated as nothing more than property, and they were often subjected to brutal treatment. They were also denied basic rights and liberties, and their families were typically broken up. These conditions made it difficult for slaves to lead decent and meaningful lives.
