Decomposers like fungi act as an intermediary. They “unlock” the nutrients held within insoluble, organic compounds and release the resulting soluble nutrients into the soil and water. Plants are then able to take those soluble nutrients up through their roots for their own use.

The organisms that obtain their energy from other organisms are called consumers. All animals are consumers, and they eat other organisms. Fungi and many protists and bacteria are also consumers.
