Robert Hooke, an English physicist, is best known for discovering the law of elasticity (Hooke's law), the first use of the word cell in the sense of a basic unit of organisms (describing the microscopic cavities in cork), and his studies of microscopic fossils, which made him an early proponent of an evolutionary theory.
