Ocean acidification is caused by the increased dissolving of carbon dioxide in ocean water, removing this carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and potentially, eventually, resulting in its storage in the deep ocean. This results in less carbon dioxide being present in the Earth's atmosphere but can also dissolve carbonate deposits in the ocean, increasing the quantity of dissolved inorganic carbon in the oceans.
