The Enlightenment produced numerous books, essays, inventions, scientific discoveries, laws, wars and revolutions. The American and French Revolutions were directly inspired by Enlightenment ideals and respectively marked the peak of its influence and the beginning of its decline.

The Enlightenment helped combat the excesses of the church, establish science as a source of knowledge, and defend human rights against tyranny. Also, it emphasized science and reason over faith and superstition, and strongly influenced the American colonies in the eighteenth century.
