Why does the author write Daniel's name "Dan'l"? What effect does it have on the reader?

perhaps it’s a shorter way of writing Daniel or it enhances the way you’re actually supposed to pronounce Daniel. (instead of saying it as “dan-yul” it’s “dan-el”)
