Why did President Johnson want to uphold the 13th amendment? What did he gett out of it? Did anything stop him?

President Johnson wanted to uphold the 13th amendment because he saw it as an opportunity for relations between the North and South to restore to friendliness. He gained support for this concept, and nothing really stopped him other than his oppositions (the South). However, he did not necessarily favor just treatment for slaves either.
