Occasionally, during earthquakes, areas near the epicenter are not damaged while those farther away are damaged. why could this occur?

Answer:

sometimes the epicenter is not near civilization. like in the ocean or areas where people or animals don't live. so if the epicenter is in those places, there Is no damage to life. hope this helps.
