By the year 1200 CE, traders and Sufis, or mystical adherents of Islam, had spread the religion throughout southern India and Sri Lanka. They had also brought it to Southeast Asia. Sufis traveled on trade ships and moved people with their fervent devotion. Within 400 years, the majority of Indonesia had converted.
