  2. They are about 2,400 km long and 150 to 450 km wide.
  3. The Himalayas are known as young fold mountains because they were formed comparatively recently in the earth's history as a result of compression.
  4. They strech from the Indus river in the West to the Brahmaputra river in the East.
  5. The Himalayas consist of three parallel ranges :-
  • The Himadri (Great or Inner Himalaya)
  • The Himachal (The Middle Himalaya)
  • The Shiwaliks (The Outer Himalaya)

Fold mountain means An upland area such as the Himalayas or Alps formed by the buckling of the earth's crust.
