Irrawaddy became an important commercial waterway as early as the 6th century A.D. and, along with its extensive network of irrigation canals, remains just as important today. Along the banks of the Irrawaddy, river cruise guests will see rice growing, fishermen plying their nets, and golden stupas (spires) dotting the landscape. Ports of call include Mandalay, Bagan and Magway.

The river has given its name to a species of dolphin, the Irrawaddy dolphin, a beakless dolphin found in the river and also at sea.
