Why does oxygen concentration in water decrease when sewage is discharge into river​

Sewage is made up of organic matter. This organic matter is used by bacteria for food causing them to increase in number and respire. The respiration of bacteria causes an increase in oxygen consumption leading to an overall decrease of oxygen in the river.
