New York City block parties in the early 1970s were where rap as a genre started to take off. The DJs at these parties started taking apart the drum breaks of funk, soul, and disco songs and letting them go on for longer. MCs who were supposed to introduce the DJs and keep the crowd excited would talk between songs, make jokes, and interact with the crowd.
