i dont really know how to explain this:

when you subtract a negative number you are essentially "adding" to it. making the number bigger but the value smaller: you are moving further into the negative numbers by subtracting 1. getting you to negative 1

it would be -4 since they are both negative it will add up. Think of it as giving somebody money and you keep giving them money, which means the total would keep adding up
