In this line, Scrooge is revealed to be an unpleasant and miserly man. His refusal to accept Christmas cheer shows his desire to be alone and upset, rather than around others who are joyful.
Scrooge believes that all he needs to be content is his money and himself. He sees no purpose for spending time with family.
Charles Dickens wrote that Scrooge is “Hard and sharp as flint.”, as well as the fact that Scrooge is a “squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous old sinner.”
