Because of the Union triumph in the Civil War and the endorsement of the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution (1865), almost 4,000,000 slaves were liberated. The Fourteenth Amendment (1868) in truth African Americans citizenship, and the Fifteenth Amendment (1870) ensured their entitlement to cast a ballot.
