Why didn’t Britain and France object when Hitler and Mussolini violated the peace treaty? What were the consequences of their total appeasement?

France was about to hold a general election and couldn't do much without Britain's support. The British citizens, on the other hand, claimed that the Treaty of Versailles was unfair on Germany and unnecessarily restrictive, and as a result, the British government opted to do little.
