In 1186, the dynasty overthrew the Ghaznavid Empire when the last Ghaznavid capital of Lahore was conquered by Sultan Mu'izz ad-Din Muhammad of Ghor. The Ghurid empire encircled Khorasan in the west at their zenith and entered northern India as far as Bengal in the east.
