Shifting of the Capital: Another mistake was the Sultan's decision to shift the capital from Delhi to Devagiri, which he renamed Daulatabad (in 1327). The decision spelt out shifting of the royalty along with the common people. This was not only impractical but highly expensive for the royal exchequer. This place held a central situation, being about equidistant from Delhi, Gujarat, Lakhnauti, Satgaon, Sunargaon, Telangana Malabar, Dvarasamudra and Kampila. Without seeking any consultation from his nobles and without carefully looking into the advantages and disadvantages, he brought ruin upon Delhi, which had grown in prosperity for 170 or 180 years and was compared to advanced cities like Baghdad and Cairo, According to the historians, what prompted the Sultan to take this step was the centralised location of Daulatabad and the, threat of Mongol raid on Delhi. However, he soon realised his mistake as it was difficult to keep a vigil on the northern frontiers from the new capital and ultimately he issued orders to re- shift the capital to Delhi.
