Set up the following:
s for soda and c for cupcakes
s = 1/2(c)
3c + 2s = 40. Subtitute for the s and solve for c
3c + 2(1/2c) = 40
4c =40
c=10
s=5
So. 4c + 5s = 4(10) + 5(5) = 40+25 = 65
