Is this equation an identity? –5f + 1 = –2 − 5f

Add 5f to both sides and we'll end up with 1 = -2, which is always false regardless of what we pick for variable f.

Therefore, this equation is not an identity. It's the complete opposite. It is a contradiction. A contradiction in algebraic equations is when the two sides never agree on the same value no matter what you plug in for the variable.
