The north benefit from the cotton industry in the south; because while the south was producing the raw material of cotton, this raw material still needed to be manufactured. This is where the north steps in; while the southern economy was based on cotton the northern industry was based on well industrialization. These raw materials would be sent north in order to produce manufactured goods such as dresses or undergarments.
