Mallory drove first at a steady speed of 110 km/h whereas Ian, the more cautious driver, drove at 90 km/h. What distance and for how long did Ian and Mallory drive?

Answer:

Mallory drove was 330 km for 3 hours, and Ian drove 190 km for 2 hours.

Explanation:

Ian and Mallory drove a total of 520 km in 5 hours

Mallory drove first at 110 km/h

Ian drove at 90 km/h

To find the distance each person drove: Let x = distance Mallory drove

Mallory's time = distance/speed

So: x / 110 km/h = Mallory's time

Ian drove the remaining distance: 520 - x km

Ian's time = (520 - x) / 90 km/h

Their total time must be 5 hours:

x/110 + (520 - x)/90 = 5

Solving this:

x = 330 km

Therefore:

Mallory drove 330 km

Ian drove 520 - 330 = 190 km

At 110 km/h, Mallory drove for 330/110 = 3 hours

At 90 km/h, Ian drove for 190/90 = 2 hours
