A and B share a $21 pizza. B ate 1/3 more than A. How much did each pay?

A = x.

We know that B ate 2/3 of A, so

let B = 2/3x.

Combined, they ate the whole pizza

at a cost of 19

x + 2/3x = 19

(multiply all by 3 to get rid of the fraction)

3x + 2x = 57

5x = 57

(divide both sides by 5)

x = 11.40, which is what A pays

subtract this from the 19,

B pays 7.60
