In the story "The Fifty First Dragon" by Heywood Broun, Assistant Professor Gaisford and the headmaster are dissatisfied with Gawaine because he is a student at the Knight School who is afraid of everything, including his own name. Gawaine is viewed as a disgrace to the school and to the tradition of being a knight.

The headmaster decides to expel Gawaine from the school and gives him a last chance to prove himself by facing a dragon. This decision is taken in the hope that Gawaine's fear might motivate him to overcome his timidity and transform into a brave knight
