Chelsea is gluing two pieces of paper together to make a single piece. The strips of paper will overlap reducing the length of each piece by 1/3 inch. If one piece is 2 2/3 inches long and the other is 3 5/6 inches long, what will be the length of the single piece of paper?

Answer: The answer would be 5 5/6 inches long.

Explanation:

In order to subtract/add the fractions, you need to find the common denominator for both.

to start we have to subtract 1/3 from 2 2/3, which would result in 2 1/3.

then to do 3 5/6 - 1/3, we must find the common denominator first. we can do this by multiplying the top and bottom of 1/3 by 2 to make it 2/6. so 5/6-2/6 = 3/6 or 1/2.

Now we can find the common denominator for the 2 1/3 and 3 1/2. which again would be 6 so we would multiply the 1/3 by 2 on the top and bottom to get 2/6 and the 1/2 by 3 on top and bottom to get 3/6. then we can add 2 2/6 + 3 3/6 = 5 5/6.

Hope this helps!
