Answer: the coffee loses heat

Explanation:It is water vapour condensing in the cooler air above the coffee. It is more like cloud than smoke. Strictly speaking it is not steam, which is the gaseous form of water and is invisible; it is actually droplets of liquid water sufficiently small to be suspended in air.
