Fran the Fearless has a well-known act at a local zoo. As part of the act, Fran handles a scary animal that she picks at random out of the Box of Terror. The following animals are in the box: 9 poisonous snakes, 7 nonpoisonous snakes, 8 poisonous spiders, and 5 nonpoisonous spiders. What is the probability that the animal Fran picks is poisonous or is a snake?

Do not round intermediate computations, and round your answer to the nearest hundredth.

Answer:

P(poisonous animal) or P(snake) = 1.14

Explanation:

poisonous snakes = 9

nonpoisonous snakes = 7

poisonous spiders = 8

nonpoisonous spiders = 5

total animals = 9 + 7 + 8 + 5 = 29

P(poisonous animal) = 9/29 + 8/29 = 17/29

P(snake) = 9/29 + 7/29 = 16/29

P(poisonous animal) or P(snake) = 17/29 + 16/29 = 33/29

= 1.138 = 1.14
