If you walked 100 meters east, then turned back and walked 50 meters west. what is your total distance traveled?

Total distance traveled = 150 meters

Simply because 100+50 = 150

The displacement on the other hand would be 50 meters east. The 100 meters east and 50 meters west, in which we can think of as -50, means we get 100+(-50) = 100-50 = 50 east. Overall we're 50 meters east of our start point.
