How can contamination of the eye lead to an upper respiratory infection?

Answer:

The conjunctiva, a delicate membrane covering your eye and eyelid, and the lungs, nose, throat, are all connected by a mucous membrane in your body. As a result, the infection can easily move from your eye to your respiratory system. From your eye, tears go into your nasal passage.
