Please explain the solution for the following problem: "Howard has 14 coins in his pocket, consisting of nickels and dimes. If the value of the coins is 90 cents, how many of each coin does he have?"

Answer:

Let n = number of nickels

d = number of dimes

n + d = 14--------->n + d = 14

.05n + .10d = .90---->n + 2d = 18

---------------

d = 4, n = 10

Howard has 10 nickels and 4 dimes.
