Methane as the chemical formula suggests is made up of only carbons and hydrogen. Hence, it is a hydrocarbon. In this case it is a alkane. Alkanes are neutral as they are unable to protonate the hydrogens bonded to the carbon, they are saturated hydrocarbons.
