One winter night the temperature fell 13 degrees between midnight and 5 A.M. By 9 A.M. the temperature had doubled from what it was at 5 A.M. By​ noon, it had risen another 12 degrees to 40 degrees. What was the temperature at​ midnight?

Work backwards.

noon temperature = 40 degrees

40 degrees - 12 degrees = 28 degrees

9 A.M temperature = 28 degrees

28 degrees / 2 = 14 degrees

5 A.M temperature = 14 degrees

14 degrees + 13 degrees = 27 degrees

midnight temperature = 27 degrees
