why are states on eastern side of united states called midwest and that is because the Great Lakes states were originally the Northwest Territory, since the United States didn't own anything past that. After the Louisiana Purchase, it didn't make any sense to refer to them as the Northwest, so they became the Middle West. In the US, the Midwest is positioned more east than it is west.

It's not the middle or the west of the US. Because when the US was expanding in the 19th century - and when many regions were initially being named - the “Midwest” was to the west of the main population centers in the “13 colony” states on the Eastern Seaboard
