I’m not an expert in the slightest, but I was taught distance is the total number of miles/feet/meters/etc traveled, whereas displacement is the shortest amount of distance it takes to get there.
For example, a grocery store is 3 blocks away from your house. You go to the store to buy groceries and 2 blocks into your journey you realize you for got your wallet so you go back home and then go to the store.
Your distance traveled is 7 blocks, but your displacement is 3 blocks.

Distance= the total length traveled
Displacement= shortest/most efficient path
