Explanation: The National Rifle Association (NRA) did begin primarily as a gun safety organization. It was founded in 1871 by Union Army officers who were concerned about the poor marksmanship of their troops (that’s an understatement however, it is believed that for every 1000 rounds of ammunition, 1 bullet would actually hit a confederate soldier). The organization aimed to promote firearms safety and education. But by the late 60’s it began to shift to a gun rights organization and by 1975 the NRA had an official branch dedicated to legislative lobbying for gun rights. It is important to note however that the NRA has historically been an advocate for safe gun use and had actually worked to enforce many of the gun legislations brought forth by the government in the past and were actually integral in the creation of state-level requirements for concealed weapons permits.
