a function simply means that for every value of x there is exactly one associated value of y.

A is a function.

B is NOT a function (as the x- value -6 has 2 different associated values of y : 5 and 4).

C is NOT a function (as the x- value 15 has 2 different associated values of y : 2 and 3).

D is NOT a function, because a circle cannot be a function, as it violates the definition for almost every point. to check, imagine a vertical line that you move along the x-axis. if it intersects the relation at any point more than once, it is not a function. and a circle gets intersected exactly twice by such a line for almost any point along is diameter (except for the 2 left and right end points).
