The British formed thirteen colonies in North America along the Atlantic coast. While they were all owned by Britain, the colonies were settled by people of British descent. Each of the American colonies had local governmental bodies called colonial assemblies that allowed for self-governance. The American colonies had limited representation in the British Parliament. One result of the Glorious Revolution and the English Bill of Rights was that the British Parliament had greater power than the monarch. From 1754 to 1763, the British and the French were at war in North America. As a result of the Treaty of Paris (1763), most of France’s North American territories came under British control.
