Explanation:

let width = w

34 yards less than eight times its width

l = 8w - 34

The area of rectangle is l x w

(8w - 34) x w

8w² -34w = 8610

8w² -34w - 8610 = 0

Find the roots using quadratic formula

w = -30.75 , 35

use the positive which is 35 and substitute to l = 8w - 34 to get the length

l = 8w - 34

l = 8(35) - 34

l = 280 - 34

l = 246
