(half of base)² + (height)² = (20)²

Explanation:

In an isosceles triangle, the angle bisector from the 3rd angle to the opposite side is a perpendicular bisector, so you split the isosceles triangle into two congruent right triangles.

This technique of 'splitting the isosceles' is used a LOT.
