add (2) and (3) term by term to eliminate y

- 19x + 0 = - 19

- 19x = - 19 ( divide both sides by - 19 )

x = 1

substitute x = 1 into either of the 2 original equations and solve for y

substituting into (1)

7(1) + 3y = 16

7 + 3y = 16 ( subtract 7 from both sides )

3y = 9 ( divide both sides by 3 )

y = 3

solution is (1, 3 )
