The nucleus is surrounded by two phospholipid bilayers, which form the nuclear envelope. This double membrane encloses the genetic material (DNA) within the nucleus, separating it from the cytoplasm of the cell. The nuclear envelope contains nuclear pores, which regulate the passage of molecules (such as RNA) between the nucleus and the cytoplasm.
