Car 2 passes car 1. To a stationary observer, car 1 has a velocity of 13 m/s to the east and car 2 has a velocity of 16 m/s to the east. How much time will pass before car 2 is 20 m ahead of car 1?

Answer:

20/3 seconds or 6 and
(2)/(3) seconds

Step-by-step explanation:

1. Since they are going the same direction we have to subtract the speeds off each other to see how much faster it looks like car 2 is going to the observer

16 - 13 = 3m/s

2. Since we know car 2 is overtaking car 1 by 3m/s we can calculate the time it takes before car is 20 m ahead by dividing it (if we use the formula speed = distance/time then time = distance/speed)

20/3 seconds or 6 and
(2)/(3) seconds
