The population of a small town was 5100 in 2021. In 2022 there was a growth spurt in the town with the building of a new Power Station and the population increased by 20%. Over the next 12 months the population of the town then decreased by 10% when one of the nearby coal mines downsized. What is the overall population percentage increase or decrease over the two year period?

Answer:

....the coefficients are calculated

20% increase =1+(20/100)=1.2

10% decrease = 1-(10/100)=0.9

overall evolution coefficient 1.2*0.9=1.08

Overall % increase = (1.08-1)*100 =8%
