During deglutition, also known as swallowing, the soft palate (not "plate") plays a crucial role in preventing food and liquids from entering the nasal cavity. As the process of swallowing begins, the soft palate elevates and moves backward, effectively closing off the passageway between the mouth and the nasal cavity, known as the nasopharynx.
