A small voice inside me asked, "What else?" I knew the Austrian was like stone. I had truly come to the end of my rope.

With measured steps, I walked toward the door to the building. Gestapo were everywhere in the corridors, like flies in fancy uniforms. Again the thought rang in my brain, People who enter this building do not always come out again. I put one foot in front of the other, waiting for someone to stop me.

Why does Miep choose to leave the building?

Answer:

Miep chooses to leave the building because he knew that there was a chance he/she would never come out again.

Step-by-step explanation:

Based on the clues from this passage, Miep thinks back to when he heard people who enter the building do not always come out again. I used this information to conclude that he leaves the building for his/her own safety.

*I put his/her and he/she because I do not know whether Miep is a girl or a boy.*
