Although margaret mead's research on coming of age in samoa was flawed anthropology, at the time it promised to:
-allow social scientists to dream of a new Western civilization that was less neurotic and more well adjusted
-resolve the nature-nurture debate of the 1920's against eugenicists
-create a role for psychologists to manipulate and shape human nature - all of these
